ShinMayawa US-2

Designed to replace the ageing ShinMaywa US-1A, the ShinMaywa US-2 joined the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force in 2007.
Now, some of you may already be thinking, this looks like a descendant of the Kawanishi flying boats like the H8k and H6K. And you’re absolutely correct. After WW2, the company was reinvented as Shin Meiwa Industries, and later ShinMaywa.
These are primarily used for search and rescue, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of being outfitted for other roles, too. Now, oddly enough, this is actually a 5-engine plane; it features 4 Rolls-Royce AE 2100 engines and a separate 1400 hp T-800 turbo shaft for boundary layer control.
A few countries have expressed interest in importing these, but India is the most interesting. If we’re being honest, though, incompetence with both Japan and India led to the deal falling apart. You don’t argue over pricing and assembly for over 10 years just to end up empty-handed for no reason. If the deal DID happen, though, you would have seen the Indian navy and coast guard flying these around the Sandakan and Nicobar islands…which were once occupied by Japan! What a Coincidence!
