Sherman Firefly

Everyone with a brain knew the nightmare German Tanks were going to be in France. (If you’ve heard of the famous “German Tank Problem”, we’re going to cover it later). But the British had a much better approach to the problem than the Americans, and in 1943 had already begun the process of mounting the powerful 17 PDR on armoured vehicles.
Some tried it on the Australian Sentinel, but with Shermans being widely available and mechanically reliable(unlike a Tiger Tank), they were the much better choice. The Sherman had to be reworked extensively to incorporate the 17-pounder, and even then, there still wasn’t a lot of room for the crew inside. The radio had to be relocated, counterweights had to be added, crew positions adjusted, but in the end, it all paid off. Maybe too much…
The Germans quickly realised that they needed to knock these tanks out first, and Commonwealth forces had several ways to camouflage the gun, from thoughtful paint schemes to covering it with leaves and foliage.
