Panther 424

But do you know about Ernst Barkmann?

In early 1944, after a lot of action on the Eastern Front, the 5th Panzer Army found itself in northern France. In July, while British and Canadian forces were bogged down at Caen, the Americans began their attempt to break out of Normandy.
This famous series of battles would become known as “Operation Cobra”. A major target is the French city of St.Lo.
After an entire month of fighting 5th Panzer Army found itself heavily battered. On July 27th, Barkmann’s damaged tank found itself cut off from the rest of the German Army.
German soldiers retreating from St.Lo informed him that an entire American armoured column of over 15 tanks and trucks was behind them.
He positioned his tank to ambush the road, hiding it amongst hedgerows and trees.
He then surprised the Americans, knocking out over 8 tanks and even blowing up a fuel truck. This battle would become known as “Barkmann’s Corner”. His Panther took a lot of damage during the fight, but he would win more battles the following day.
“Now wait a minute, I thought the 5th Panzer Army was fighting the British and Canadians at Caen?”
Yes, you’re absolutely correct. And that’s because “Barkmann’s Corner” never happened. It was all propaganda.
