M48 Patton

You may have heard people refer to the larger American tanks in the Vietnam War as M60 Pattons, but the truth is the M60 never went to Vietnam. The Guys stationed in Europe had priority (and luck) there.
The reasoning is simple enough, though, the Americans were not going to meet the level of enemy Armour from North Vietnam that they would against the Soviet Union in Europe. So long story short, there wasn’t anything in Vietnam really worth throwing a 105mm gun at.
The real workhorse was the M48 Patton, an older but fierce machine in its own right. The result of hard lessons learned during WW2 and early in Korea, over 600 saw combat in Vietnam.
Fun fact, despite the extensive use of tanks, and several hundred being lost in combat, the Americans only fought one MAJOR tank battle in the entire war, at Ben Het.
