K239 Chunmoo
The story starts back in the early 1970s, with North Korea deploying more and more powerful weapon systems with the help of the Soviet Union.
One of the most concerning of these was the BM-21, a self-propelled 122mm Rocket Launcher that could fire 40 rockets in just 20 seconds.
South Korea, back then, wasn’t the South Korea we know today, and found itself struggling to keep up with the North. With the arrival of the K136 Kooryong in the late 70s, the odds finally began to balance out against North Korean Artillery.
The system stayed in the frontline for decades, and starting in 2009, a new system was designed, the K239 Chunmoo!
Entering service 6 years later in 2015, it gave any artilleryman a lot of enticing options.
It can carry and fire:
12 KM26A2 230 mm rockets
12 (CGR080) 239 mm chunmoo guided rockets, these can be cluster bombs or High Explosive Penetration warheads.
Or a whopping 40 k33 131 mm unguided rockets.
