EE-T1 Osorio

Brazilian Automotive and defence company Engesa had begun designing tank prototypes back in the early 80s. Now this is interesting, because Brazil is far from a country that will find itself facing serious threats from any of its neighbours.
Engesa primarily wanted two things: a higher-tech tank that could sell in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
And two, to demonstrate that Brazilian industry was capable of putting out a tank on par with NATO, at a fraction of the cost.
The problem is that because of the Cold War, a lot of these countries already had surplus, and often outdated tanks from the Soviet Union and the United States. There’s no way they would have been able to afford the Osório. Sherman’s, T-34s, Chaffees, M48S and the rest were still common sights in the 80s.
And with the winding down of the Cold War, too, even more up-to-date tanks were on the market. The only potentially interested buyers with money were in the Middle East. With the Saudis especially losing interest, it hurt the project so badly that the EE-T1 didn’t make it past the prototype phase.
It isn’t all doom and gloom, though; two Osório tanks were stored at the São Paulo war arsenal. They were later given to the Brazilian 13th Mechanised cavalry regiment, and served with them until 2013.
